Moclin is in the Granada province of Andalucia within an area known as del Poniente Granadino less than thirty minutes drive from the city of Granada itself.
In the 15th century, the Castle of Moclin known as the "Shield of Granada" by the Moors was the first strategic fortress to be taken by the Catholic Monarchs in their drive to conquer Granada. The fort was left to decay and a christian church built on it's ruins. There are many watchtowers in the area including one immediately behind Delahoja Guesthouse.
Moclin is also famed for a massive pilgrimage that takes place on October 5th call Cristo del Pano. When King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella launched their conquest of Granada from Moclin they donated a banner with a picture of christ bearing the weight of the cross. The painting was found to have miraculous powers when a sacristan of the church discovered his cataracts cured after cleaning it. Word got out and people travelled from far and wide to seek cures and the painting soon gained a reputation for helping infertile women conceive by wiping the painting with a piece of linen as it was paraded before them and then going into the woods to pick vervain. However it is often claimed they fell pregnant not by touching the painting but by the local men they met in the olive groves.
